Getting a Chinese mobile phone number
I just found a pretty comprehensive website on how to get a local Chinese number for your mobile phone. Using your foreign card via roaming can be very expensive. So this is a cheap option if you are coming to China and you want to stay connected. In my case I just walked into one of the thousands of mobile phone shops, pointed at one of the numbers and got a simcard. However I still don’t know how much I am really paying for calls. I found some information about the rates but I am not sure how accurate they are. One thing that is really annoying is that China Mobile is constantly sending me shortmessages, my phone can’t read. Even if it could, my knowledge of Chinese characters would not be sufficient to understand 
As far as I know it is not possible to make them stop sending these messages and on top you have to pay for them. Next week I will go to a shop and try to solve the problem.

Denkt dran, ihr bezahlt auch dann wenn ihr angerufen werdet, außerdem gibt es häufig Nummer die sehr günstig in größeren Städten (Bejing, Shanghai) sind und ausserhalb dieser Städte sehr teuer sind.

solche SMS sind nur werbungen und das ist kostenfrei und meistens ganz unbenutzvoll,keine sorgen,du brauchst gar nicht dazu zahlen.Und wenn du nach Shanghai gehst und dort einhalb jahr bleiben moechtest,kaufst du einfach eine shanghaisnummer,dann ist es guenstig zu anrufen.Und du sollst auch monatsgebuehren bezahlen,meistens mit bestimmter zahl von sms,zb 200 im monat,das heisst,in jeder monat brauchst du fuer jede erste 200MSN,die du sendest,nichts zu bezahlen.Und wenn du spaeter in verschiedliche provenzen reisen moechtest,es ist sehr teuer zu anrufen,SMS senden ist aber der selbe und natuerlich guenstiger,und die erste 200MSN sind still kostenfrei.wenn deine restbezahlung kleiner als 10yuan,kannst du nicht mehr weiter anrufen aber kannst du noch MSN senden.wenn du in der stadt bist,wo deine handynummer gehoert,kannst du einfach 1860 oder1861 anrufen,und fragen nach deiner rechnung.umsonst ist schwer zu wissen,wie viel gibt es deine restbezahlung noch,eine loesung ist nur ,bevor der reise,mehr gebuehren bezahlen,aber bestens nicht zuviel,weil wenn du bezahlst,ist unmoeglich zurueckzubekommen.

I was in Shanghai this weekend using my Jinan card to call. I put 50 Kuai on the other night and it lasted for 1 day. It is pretty damn expensive. But I already bought a Shanghai card now
