Firefox Extensions

Tuesday, November 15th, 2005

I have been asked quite a lot from friends and collagues, which extensions for Firefox are good and which ones do i need for this and that. There are tons of extensions out there, and some are excellent and some are really crappy. I meant to post a list of extensions I use, but I never found the time. Just now I came across an article on chip.de, which has some good extensions listed by their focus and with a description. Here you go!

Here are also some other links where you can get extensions:

New URL for Geocaching Posts

Sunday, November 13th, 2005

Because I know that quite a lot of geocachers are reading my blog from time to time, I set up two new subdomains to reach only the geocaching section of my blog. The URLs are:
geocaching.hesspoint.de and geocaching.hesspoint.com
This is just to save you the clicking to the category if you are just interested in geocaching. However feel free to read the other stuff on my blog as well! :-)

My 3rd Cache

Saturday, November 12th, 2005

My third geocache "Sanatorium" has just been approved :-) It is a micro which is placed in a forest near Paderborn.

It is next to a sanatorium, hence the name. Hope you all go for it and like it.

Mobile Caching

Wednesday, November 9th, 2005

I just found something amazing: geocaching.com has a WAP site. Just log in with your cellphone at wap.geocaching.com.
That can actually be a great helper if you forgot your printouts or your PDA with all the cache-infos on it. So from now on the excuse: "I couldn’t find the cache because I forgot the printout" doesn’t work anymore.
But if you also forget to bring your cellphone, you are really screwed ;-)
If you use a PC you can test it here.

Geocoin Race

Wednesday, November 9th, 2005

Recently I clicked to my favorite Geocaching onlineshop (by accident ;-)) and saw the cool new German Geocoins that just came out. So no way I could not buy one. But one? Why not two? A German and a US Coin. That moment I had the idea. Why not let them compete? But how? A race around the world! Ain’t that cool? I let the US Coin take on the German Coin to go around the world. So here they are: I proudly present the two contestants:

So hopefully tomorrow I will drop one in each of my caches: One in "Philosopher’s Path" and one in "Campus Mystery". The rules for the race are rather easy:

  1. The Coin has to travel once around the world and has to visit at least 5 different countries on its way. Visit means to be dropped in a cache.
  2. It does not matter if the Coin goes around eastward or westward, but once the coin is on its way it may only travel forward, never backwards.
  3. The coins should not travel together. That means that they should never be both in one cache at the same time.
  4. The winner is the coin first to reach Germany again, that means being placed in a German cache.
  5. If the coin is the winner and made it around in 80 days or less (counting from the date it is dropped into its start cache), the person who brings it back to Germany will get a German Geocoin from me (Of course only if the rules above where followed).

So have fun and be quick to catch one. And please follow the rules!

By the way: If you wonder how i did this neat Polaroid frames and the fonts, check the Polaroid frame tutorial and 1001 free fonts.

George Says…

Tuesday, November 8th, 2005

Didn’t you always want George W. to say what you want. Maybe like "I can’t say nuclear" or "Momy I want home…"? Here is your chance.

Go to http://george.says-it.com and type your text into the box. You can also let Arni or John say it.

PHP update trouble

Tuesday, November 8th, 2005

Now that all providers updated their PHP to 4.4.1 because of the security risks, more bad news hits the fan: PHP 4.4.1 can cause PHP applications to crash. According to heise news, the functions next(), prev() and reset() are affected. I wonder if this was the reason for my WordPress problems last week.

Do you speak Geocaching?

Saturday, November 5th, 2005

Here is finally the post I wanted to make 3 days ago:
Do you know what TFTC or UPS (no, not United Parcel Service ;-)) means? Do you know what a geomuggle is? GeoLex is a cool online geocaching dictionary where you find lots of answers and information about our sport.
